Resources Worth Paying For

In this information society there is much information that is made freely available. However there are still some resources that one must pay in order to enjoy. Some of these are well worth it and should be a part of information gathering tools. Here are five that I consider must haves that I use constantly to stay abreast of what is going on in the black community as well as keep up with opportunities and tools that will improve my life. Just yesterday I learned of BlackAtlas.com while reading the latest issue of Black Enterprise magazine. Below are my 5 must have information resources:

1. Black Enterprise Magazine subscription
2. XM Radio subscription (particularly for talk radio Joe Madison, Al Sharpton, Warren Ballatine, and Mario Armstrong)
3. Fast Company magazine subscription
4. Cable or Satellite Television (Mainly for TVOne)
5. Wall Street Journal

Let me know what you think of these. What would you add to the list?

The N-Word

This week Mateen and I discuss why no one should use this word, no matter what comedians and young people say. This word was used to denigrate and destroy a race of people for hundreds of years and it needs to be laid to rest. We are the only people on the planet who have embraced a word used to destroy us. If this is not true please show me a Jewish person who says we used the word 'kike' among ourselves because we have made it a term of endearment or the Mexican who has redefined the word 'spic' in a loving way amongst themselves. We need to dispense with this nonsense and correct those who are behaving in error and making a mockery of our ancestors. Perhaps our desire to continue using this word is a manifestation of the Stockholm Syndrome.

If you want more information regarding the origin of this word, please check out 'Malcolm X On Afro American History'. Another great work is 'Chains and Images of Psychological Slavery' by Na'im Akbar.

Black Fatherhood

This week Mateen and I discuss a very important topic in the black community: Fatherhood. Many of us have grown-up without fathers. Many of us have children today that we are not fathering. Why is this? This has to change if we wish to move forward as a group and be productive participants in society. We must learn to become better fathers to our children, husbands to our wives, and leaders in our communities.

Please stop by and join in the discussion.

Warmest Regards,
Mateen Diop and Kai Dupé

Happy Holidays

This week at work while I was enjoying a cup of coffee, a co-worker playfully chided me for not wearing green on St. Patrick's Day. In trying to be nice, I said it totally slipped my mind. He says, well it is hard to slip my mind since I am Irish. Precisely. You are Irish and I am not. Bill Cosby would have you believe European Americans do not connect with their heritage, so we should not connect with ours. Wrong! Even if what Mr. Cosby says is true why are white people the standard. Who cares what their practices are. Let them have theirs and we can have ours. There is nothing wrong with that. My co-worker did not question the color of my clothing during Kwaanza or last month while I was celebrating Black History Month. We need to do what we do for our own reasons and not to follow the standard of others. This week we discuss the meaning of holidays!

Dressing for Success

Join Mateen and Kai as they discuss the importance of dressing for success. Young black men are wearing athletic gear as if they are clothing. They are wearing undergarments such as T-Shirts, and boxer-briefs as outerwear instead of underwear, and wearing athletic shoes as if they are dress shoes. This has to change. We need our young black men to dress in a manner so they are taken seriously as we are living in serious times.

Please drop by for our discussion.

What should I do with my life?

On the show this week, Mateen and I talk about how to go about choosing the right career. Obviously, we can not provide all of the answers to this important question in thirty minutes but we do intend to provide a few things that have helped us along the way and give concrete examples of how these ideas can work for you.

One of my favorite resources on this journey is a web-based newsletter entitled "Finding Your Prosperity.com.

You can visit them here and sign up for a very helpful newsletter.

The Miracle of Mentoring

On Sunday, Mateen and I discussed the importance of mentors in the African American community. African American males are suffering. Do you know what the leading cause of death is among African American males? It is suicide. We need more Black men to mentor. I attended a mentoring meeting last week. Of the 25 mentors in attendance I was the only Black male. This has to change. Black men it is time to stand up. Join 100 Black Men of America and become a mentor. For more information pick up a copy of The Miracle of Mentoring from amazon.com.

The Obama Inauguration

I am back from the Inauguration. It was a wonderful experience standing on the mall and listening to President Obama give his speech. Everyone I spoke to remarked about the electricity in the air. We had planned on doing several shows during the course of the 2 days that we spent in DC. It was not possible. Cell phones were not working and it was extremely cold. I will continue to post my thoughts here and we will do several shows this week to give you all a glimpse into what we experienced. The first Black President in the history of the United States has been elected and we were there for his historic inauguration. It was beautiful.

The Year in Review (2008)

This morning Diop and Dupé took a look back at their achievements and shortcomings for the year 2008. Also, Dr. Fred Williams of The University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Williams has recently founded Black Men United for Reading and Writing. His hope is that this organization can spur a movement for Black men to read more and learn about their culture and history as descendants of African people.

This was a great conversation. If you missed it please go to our profile page on BlogTalkRadio or click on the link here and take a listen.
