Have you ever heard of The Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA)? BDPA has been around since 1975. The organization came into being when Earl Pace and David Wimberly met in Philadelphia to discuss their concerns about people of color in the computing industry. People of color were under represented in the field and an overall lack of career mobility existed for those who were in the field.

I first learned of BDPA in 2008. As someone who has been a computer scientist for over 20 years at that time, it is unacceptable to me that it took me so long to learn of its existences. I am not sure what took me so long to learn of this wonderful organization, but part of my mission going forward is to make sure people of color who are interested in technology (which should be all people of color), are aware of the opportunities that BDPA provides.

The lack of blacks and other people of color continue to be a problem. Many including myself are still studying this problem in 2010. One of the factors that have come to the fore is the social conditioning of people of color when it comes to computing.

It is social conditioning that plays a role when we see blacks over represented in entertainment and athletics and it is social conditioning when there is an under representation of blacks in computing. The best treatment of this topic that I have found thus far is Stuck in the Shallow End by Jane Margolis.

I have attended many conferences on technology and education. This was by far the best technology conference I have ever attended. I have never attended an event where there were so many black women and men who were technology professionals. There were thousands. The conference provides an opportunity for learning in a environment that is culturally relevant.
The conference is also a place where the youth are encouraged and exposed to technology. Every year the youth participate in the High School Computer Competition. (HSCC). During the conference, each chapter that entered the competition presents their project which could be anything from developing a piece of desktop software, a website, or perhaps an iPhone app. The winner is crowned as part of the conference.

My observation is that the conference is strictly business during the day and a lot of fun and mingling in the evening. This year the conference is being held in Philadelphia July 28 – July 31. If you are interested in a career in information technology or you are a technology professional who wants to learn what is hot in terms of technology or you simply want to connect with other black professionals in information technology you should make it a point to be in Philadelphia this year. I know I will be there.

Some of these are well worth it and should be a part of information gathering tools. The N-Word

This week Mateen and I discuss why no one should use this word, no matter what comedians and young people say. This word was used to denigrate and destroy a race of people for hundreds of years and it needs to be laid to rest. We are the only people on the planet who have embraced a word used to destroy us. If this is not true please show me a Jewish person who says we used the word 'kike' among ourselves because we have made it a term of endearment or the Mexican who has redefined the word 'spic' in a loving way amongst themselves. We need to dispense with this nonsense and correct those who are behaving in error and making a mockery of our ancestors. Perhaps our desire to continue using this word is a manifestation of the Stockholm Syndrome.

This week at work while I was enjoying a cup of coffee, a co-worker playfully chided me for not wearing green on St. Patrick's Day. In trying to be nice, I said it totally slipped my mind. He says, well it is hard to slip my mind since I am Irish. Precisely. You are Irish and I am not. Bill Cosby would have you believe European Americans do not connect with their heritage, so we should not connect with ours. Wrong! Even if what Mr. Cosby says is true why are white people the standard. Who cares what their practices are. Let them have theirs and we can have ours. There is nothing wrong with that. My co-worker did not question the color of my clothing during Kwaanza or last month while I was celebrating Black History Month. We need to do what we do for our own reasons and not to follow the standard of others. This week we discuss the meaning of holidays!

I am back from the Inauguration. It was a wonderful experience standing on the mall and listening to President Obama give his speech. Everyone I spoke to remarked about the electricity in the air. We had planned on doing several shows during the course of the 2 days that we spent in DC. It was not possible. Cell phones were not working and it was extremely cold. I will continue to post my thoughts here and we will do several shows this week to give you all a glimpse into what we experienced. The first Black President in the history of the United States has been elected and we were there for his historic inauguration. It was beautiful.

THE 26TH AFRICAN AMERICAN MEN AND BOYS CONFERENCE

AUSTIN, December 11, 2008 – Kai Ajala Dupé, educational technology expert and advocate for the global use of technology, will deliver the keynote speech at the 26th African American Men and Boys Conference on Saturday, December 13, 2008. The free event, presented by the African American Men and Boys Harvest Foundation, Inc., will be held at Round Rock High School in Austin, Texas.

"I work diligently to assist those around me to transform their lives through education, and hope that my words will inspire a new generation of leaders in the fields of education and technology," Dupé said.

The African American Men and Boys Harvest Foundation is a unique organization that brings together successful African American men to mentor and partner with African American boys within a structured environment, and with a specific focus on reducing the achievement gap between the boys and their peers.

The theme for this year's conference is "Individual Responsibility," and Dupé will speak on "Making Sacrifices Today for Tomorrow’s Success." The forum will include workshops for children and adults, and refreshments and door prizes will be awarded to attendees.

"Previous conferences have more than met my expectations," said Mateen Diop, Principal of Herman Hirsch Elementary School in San Antonio, Texas, "As an educational leader I received concrete solutions I can institute immediately at my school."

About Kai Dupé
Kai Ajala Dupé is an expert on educational technology and travels around the world advocating for the use of technology in education. In addition to running a small business called KDP, Dupé is an online instructor for Kaplan University where he teaches courses in programming and database design. Dupé voluntarily serves as Director of Communications for the Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) and writes for the Where Are Blacks In Technology blog, where he addresses issues concerning the lack of participation of African Americans and other minorities in the technology arena and promotes ideas to reduce the digital divide. As a doctoral student in the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology (GSEP) Educational Technology program, Dupé is conducting research to determine success factors in the unique journey of African American males.

Dr. Stovall is the director of The National African American Student Leadership Conference. Kai spoke at this event last January at Rust College. It is a wonderful event and the kind of conference we need to replicate all across the country at HBCU's and in our communities.

Our young people need to be taught how to develop a vision and how to sacrifice or forgo certain things while keeping their eyes on the prize. This has worked for me my entire life and Mateen has had similar experiences. How do we get this idea across to our young people.
